  • Description

The sharing of international seabed resources received a lot of attention at a week-long Afro-Asian Legal conference in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur.
SYNOPSIS: A Hundred and thirty delegates from 33 African and Asian countries took part and there were also several European countries represented. Other topics discussed included territorial asylum, international commercial arbitration, environmental law and the question of new states inheriting obligations incurred by former colonial administrations. However, much of the time was allocated to the law of the sea. At the last session of the U.N. Law of the Sea Conference some developed countries made a proposal for the exploitation and exploration of the sea which some developing countries refused to accept. As a result the Afro-Asian conference has decided to submit alternate proposals to next month's session of the Law of the Sea Conference in New York.
