Background: After riding in Argentina Piggott stopped off for a few days in Brazil on his way to South Africa. This was his first appearance on Brazilian race tracks. On Saturday 13 November he rode JARGON into third place in the fifth race at the Brazilian Jockey Club race track at Gavea, Rio de Janeiro. On the following day he had two more rides booked but rain caused one of them, LEONICO, to be scratched. Lester rode MULTIPLIC in the second race but did not get a place. 15 November is a public holiday in Brazil to celebrate the anniversary of the Proclamation of the Republic. This was the day when Lester had his best chance of a winning ride at the Gavea race track. He was booked to ride GUIZO in the first race, the two thirty, on the sand track over a distance of 2000 metres. Trained by Zilmar GUEDES, GUIZO had been fourth to Staccato in his last race.

It was a warm, sunny day, and there was a large crowd to see Lester ride. Drawn number three of the five runners, GUIZO was well away out of the starting stalls and was lying second as they passed the stands. At the end of the back straight Lester took GUIZO smoothly past the leader ad when they turned into the straight he as about two lengths in front. The issue was never in doubt. GUIZO kept going well and increased his lead. Lester brought him past the post to win smoothly by three or four lengths. He was met by the delighted owners, the MEDEIROS brothers, and then rode in past a loudly-applauding crowd. Brazilian comment was that Lester had ridden a beautifully judged race in truly impeccable professional style.

The race was for nationally-bred four-year-olds which had not won more than three races in Rio and Sao Paulo.

Lester Piggott and his wife were leaving Rio for South Africa on the night of 15 November. They were quoted by the Brazilian Press as saying that they hope to return to Brazil in 1972.
