Background: Mrs Winnie Mandela responded on December 14 to continued rumours that her husband Nelson Mandela, former leader of the outlawed African National Congress (ANC) guerrilla group, may soon be freed. Mandela, 66, is serving a life imprisonment term. He was jailed in 1964 after being convicted of sabotage, a charge he did not deny, but he told the court blacks had come to realise that the only way they could present grievances to the white-minority government was through violence. Nelson Mandela remains a potent international symbol of resistance to South Africa's government policies. The Prime Minister P.W. Botha, during a tour of Europe in 1984, was asked to release Mr. Mandela, by the UK and West German governments. Mandela's wife Winnie, who is banished to a small remote town of Brandfort in the Orange Free State for her part in black-rights demonstrations, is sceptical about the rumours of her husband's release. Mrs Mandela says she can see no reason for such rumours; her husband is either a prisoner, or he is free.
