    CANADIAN AND SWEDISH PLAYERS SWAPPED PUNCHES IN A RIOTOUS FREE-FOR-ALL BRAWL THAT BROKE IN AN ICE HOCKEY MATCH AT GOTEBURG, SWEDEN, YESTERDAY (FRIDAY). SIX PLAYERS, FOUR OF THEM CANADIAN, WERE IN THE PENALTY BOX AT ONE TIME DURING THE MATCH.

    IT ALL BEGAN WITH A MINOR CLASH BETWEEN SWEDISH AND CANADIAN PLAYER AND SOON FLARE INTO A WILD MELEE ON THE ICE INVOLVING ALL PLAYERS OF BOTH TEAMS. THE EAST GERMAN SWISS REFEREES TRIED IN VAIN TO CALM PLAYERS.

    TEMPERS FINALLY COOLED AND AFTER HALF AN HOUR'S INTERRUPTION THE GAME RESUMED WITH CANADA GOING ON TO REPEAT SWEDEN, LAST YEAR'S CHAMPIONS, 5-2. THE GAME WAS THE FINAL ONE OF A PRE-WORLD TOURNAMENT WARMUP BETWEEN SWEDEN, CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES.

    EARLIER, SWEDEN AND CANADA HAD BOTH TROUNCED THE U.S. TEAM 12-4 AND 6-1, RESPECTIVELY. THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, OPENING IN SWEDEN ON MARCH 7, WILL BE CONTESTED BY MOST EUROPEAN NATIONS, INCLUDING RUSSIA, WEST GERMANY, CZECHOSLOVAKIA AND BRITAIN.
