  • Description

World-famous entertainer Maurice Chevalier is under round-the-clock watch, as he lies seriously ill in a Paris hospital with kidney trouble. The 83-year-old music hall and film star entered Necker Hospital on Monday (13 December) with an ailment which, before the kidney machine was invented, generally led to coma and death.

The entertainer, who began his show business career at the age of 12, had complained some time of pains. He is suffering from an excessive urea count in the bloodstream. This is a compound normally filtered by the kidneys. Despite repeated blood transfusions to lower the urea count, his kidneys have remained blocked and that, say doctors, is the whole problem.

This VISNEWS re-issue shows Chevalier quietly celebrating his 83rd birthday, on 12 September of this year, with a small number of close friends at his country home near Paris. The guests included U.S. comedian Jerry Lewis, who sang his version of "Happy Birthday".
