  • Description

Although the waters in flood torn Bihar State in northeast India are receding, it's estimated that at least 50,000 people are still homeless and the Indian Government is continuing a massive relief operation. Many are still marooned on rooftops.
Supplies are still being airlifted to flood victims, but in the past few days road and rail services to Patna have been restored, making the relief and rescue operations easier.
The Government has given Bihar State 10,000 tons of food grain above its normal monthly quota and is trying to supply 50,000 loaves of bread each day of this week (31 August).
The city of Patna, with a population of about 1,000,000, has been underwater since 25 August and officials are still worried about the possibility of epidemics breaking out. Drains and sewers are clogged with mud and debris. Much of the material being airlifted to victims is medicine and medical teems are working to prevent the spread of disease and minimize the suffering from injuries.
There has so far been no casualty report from the city but monsoon floods throughout the country have so far claimed 450 lives this year.
On Tuesday (2 September), there were reports of new flooding in Bombay, where 3,000,000 commuters were said to be stranded by staled transit facilities.
Flooding has also hit Uttar Pradesh, Assam and Orissa States.
