  • Description

French President de Gaulle, accompanied by Madame de Gaulle, was met at London's Victoria Station by Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh when he arrived Apr 5 for a four-day state visit. A 'Caravelle' jet-plane flew him from Paris to Gatwick Airport, and the Duchess of kent travelled with the French leader and his wife from Gatwick to London.

At Victoria General de Gaulle met the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, his war-time military colleague, Lord Alexander of Tunis, british Premier Macmillan, Home Secretary Butler and other ministers. The Coldstream Guards, a famous British regiment, provided the Guard of Honour, and their band played the 'Marseillaise'.

After the Station meeting President de Gaulle drove with the Queen in an open landau carriage to Buckingham Palace; the Duke of Edinburgh and madame de Gaulle followed in a second landau. They were surrounded by a Sovereign's Escort of Household Cavalry and drove through decorated streets and cheering crowds; it was a historic moment for President de Gaulle who last came to London in 1940 after the fall of France, almost unknown.
