    HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE PACKED SOTHEBY'S LONG GALLERY FOR THE SALE WHICH BEGAN IN THE EVENING. DEGA'S WORKS WERE THE MOST HIGHLY PRIZED. HIS PAINTINGS "LA REPETITION SUR LA SCENE, CINQ DANSEUSES", FETCHED GBP55,000. BUT AN EARLIER PASTEL "DANSEUSE BASCULENT" FETCHED GBP105,000, THE HIGHEST FIGURE FOR A SINGLE PICTURE IN THE SALE. MONET'S "LA PONT DU CHEMIN DE FER A ARGENTEUIL SOLD FOR GBP77,000, WHILE A COLOURFUL RENOIR "FILLETTES AU CHAPEAU" WENT FOR GBP61,000.

    THE PAINTINGS CAME UNDER THE HAMMER AT SOTHEBY'S FOLLOWING THE DEATH OF MR. WILLIAM CARGILL, A SCOTTISH SHIPPING MAGNATE, WHO HAD COLLECTED THEM OVER 40 YEARS. HIS COLLECTION WAS ONE OF THE FINEST IN BRITAIN, AND CERTAINLY THE LEAST KNOWN FOR MR. CARGILL LEAVED ALONE, EXCEPT FOR A HOUSEKEEPER, IN A REMOTE AREA OF SCOTLAND.
