  • Description

Twenty vehicles - mobile surgeries and station waggons - have been presented to Ivory Coast for use in combating leprosy. They were bought with funds raised in France, Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg and Canada by committees of the Foundation Raoul Follereau. This foundation has now bought a total of sixty vehicles for the fight against leprosy in Ivory Coast. They are distributed throughout the interior.

At the handing-over ceremony for the latest vehicles, the foundation was represented by M. Jean de Curton, who is Director General of SARI Peugeot - makers of the vehicles. The Ivory Coast Government was represented by Dr. Felix Serie, Director General of Health.

SYNOPSIS: The Ministry of Health in the Ivory Coast is constantly involved with one of the world's most feared diseases - leprosy.

But these vehicles will help in the fight to contain the disease.

They are a gift to the Ivory Coast. Dr. Felix Serie, the health minister, received them from M. Jean de Curton, who is head of the firm which supplied them.

Twenty trucks and stationwagons were donated from funds raised in five countries - France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Canada and Italy. The fund raising was carried out by committees of the international Raoul Follereau foundation.

After the brief formal ceremony Dr. Serie and M. de Curton want to inspect the vehicles. They bring to sixty the number donated by the Follereau foundation for fighting Leprosy in the Ivory Coast.

The vehicle will be distributed throughout the country. The trucks will be equipped as mobile surgeries, and the station wagons will be used to transport district medical officers on their rounds. The aim of the Raoul Follereau foundation is to bring to leprosy sufferers the comfort of constant medical attention. The foundation also tries to follow this up by collaborating with such organisations as Rotary and Lions Clubs in raising money to provide material aid to lepers.
