    GENERAL GOWN TOLD NEWSMEN AT KADUNA THAT HIS TRIP TO CHAD WAS ONE OF "SEVERAL MEET YOUR NEIGHBOUR" TRIPS THAT HE HAD PLANNED. THE GENERAL'S AIRCRAFT THEN LEFT FOR FORT LAMY. AMONG THE NIGERIAN PARTY WAS THE COMMISSIONER FOR EXTERNAL AFFAIRS, DR OKOI ARIKPO, AND THE GOVERNOR OF THE NORTH-EASTERN STATE, COLONEL MUSA USMAN. THEY WERE GREETED ON ARRIVAL AT FORT LAMY AIRPORT BY PRESIDENT TOMBALBAYE.

    THE TWO LEADERS THEN WENT BY CAR TO THE STATE HOUSE FOR THEIR CONFERENCE. A JOINT COMMUNIQUE SAID GENERAL GOWN BRIEFED THE CHAD PRESIDENT ON THE PRESENT SITUATION IN NIGERIA. THE COMMUNIQUE SAID THAT PRESIDENT TOMBALBAYE EXPRESSED HIS UNDERSTANDING OF THE IMMEDIATE PROBLEMS FACING NIGERIA AND HIS SUPPORT FOR UNITY AND PEACE IN THAT COUNTRY. GENERAL GOWON SAID HE THOUGHT SUCH A VISIT WOULD ENABLE OTHER AFRICAN LEADERS TO APPRECIATE BETTER THE CURRENT NIGERIAN POLITICAL SITUATION.

    SPEAKING TO NEWSMEN AT FORT LAMY AIRPORT BEFORE HIS DEPARTURE TO LAGOS, GENERAL GOWON SAID HE HOPED THAT THE KAMPALA PEACE TALKS WITH BIAFRA COULD BE RESUMED, HE SAID THE BREAKDOWN OF THE KAMPALA TALKS WAS NOT HIS FAULT BUT THAT OF THE BIAFRAN LEADER, COLONEL OJUKWU, GENERAL GOWON ADDED THAT HIS SIDE WAS READY TO BEGIN DISCUSSIONS AND THAT THE NIGERIAN FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WAS AT THE DISPOSAL OF BIAFRA.
