  • Description

A TWO-STOREY WOODEN HOUSE STANDING ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF CHICAGO HAS BEEN THE LAST OBSTACLE IN THE WAY OF A NEW 157-MILLION-DOLLAR HIGHWAY. ON TUESDAY, THAT OBSTACLE WAS REMOVED -- BUT NOT WITHOUT A STRUGGLE.

THE OWNER OF THE HOUSE, 31-YEAR-OLD WAYNE HAMILTON -- IGNORED EVICTION ORDERS, CLAIMING THE PRICE OFFERED BY THE GOVERNMENT WAS NOT ENOUGH. WITH HIS WIFE, THREE DAUGHTERS, AND A SHOTGUN, HAMILTON SAT TIGHT.

WHEN DEPUTIES OF THE COUNTY SHERIFF ARRIVED, HAMILTON REFUSED TO OPEN THE DOOR. THE DOOR WAS SMASHED IN, AND THE GUN, WHICH WAS NOT LOADED, WAS TAKEN AWAY FROM HAMILTON. HE WAS CARRIED BODILY FROM THE HOUSE, AND RELEASED WHEN HE PROMISED NO TO CAUSE A DISTURBANCE.

IMMEDIATELY THE BULLDOZERS MOVED IN. WITHIN TWENTY MINUTES THE 80-YEAR-OLD HOUSE WAS A PILE OF SMASHED TIMBER AND RUBBLE. HAMILTON CLAIMED HE PAID $16,500 FOR THE HOUSE SIX YEAR AGO. THE STATE HAD OFFERED HIM ONLY $13,800.
