  • Description

QUEEN ELIZABETH GOT A ROUSING RECEPTION SHE VISITED MUNICH TODAY (FRIDAY). HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF BAVARIANS LINED THE STREETS TO CHEER HER PROGRESS. HER ITINERARY TODAY INCLUDED A VISIT TO AN ART GALLERY AND A NIGHT AT THE OPERA.

IT WAS THE FOURTH DAY OF HER HISTORIC STATE VISIT TO WEST GERMANY. COMING FROM THE RHINELAND, SHE WAS GREETED BY THE BIGGEST CROWDS SINCE THE TOUR BEGAN. MUNICH IS A TRADITIONALLY MONARCHIST CITY, AND UNTIL 1918 THE SEAT OF THE BAVARIAN KINGS.

SHE WORE A PALE ROSE DRESS WITH A WHITE COAT AND DIAMOND BROOCH. AFTER A CIVIC RECEPTION, SHE DROVE TO THE ALTE PINAKOTHEK (OLD ART GALLERY) FOR A 25-MINUTE TOUR OF THE HUGE RUBENS COLLECTION. THE QUEEN HERSELF OWNS ONE OF THE WORLD'S BIGGEST AND MOST VALUABLE PRIVATE ART COLLECTIONS.

TONIGHT, SHE AND THE DUKE DROVE TO THE MUNICH NATIONAL THEATRE TO SEE A GALA PERFORMANCE OF THE OPERA DER ROSENKAVALIER, BY RICHARD STRAUSS, ONE OF MUNICH'S FAVOURITE SONS. FOR THE OCCASIONS, SHE WORE A WHITE ORGANZA DRESS, WITH TIARA, AND DIAMOND NECKLACE, EAR-RINGS AND BRACELET. AND LIKE THE START OF THE DAY, IT WAS ANOTHER ROUSING RECEPTION.

(AFTER THE OPERA, THE QUEEN AND THE DUKE WERE DUE TO LEAVE BY TRAIN FOR SALEM, ON LAKE CONSTANCE, FOR A QUIET WEEKEND WITH WEST GERMAN RELATIVES).
