  • Description

TWO DESTROYERS FROM THE UNITED STATES NAVY SAILED THROUGH THE DABDANELLES EARLY YESTERDAY (18 JUNE) ON THEIR WAY TO THE BLACK SEA.

THE DESTROYERS, THE USS NEWMAN K. PERRY AND THE USS NORRIS, ARE PART OF THE U.S. SIXTH FLEET IN THE MEDITERRANEAN. LATER IN THE DAY, THEY PASSED THROUGH ISTANBUL'S BOSPHORUS STRAIT, WHERE CROWDS WATCHED THE SHIPS STEAM INTO THE BLACK SEA PROPER.

THEY ARE ON A FOUR-DAY MISSION TO 'SHOW THE FLAG' IN THE SEA, WHICH IS BORDERED ON ALL SIDES BUT ONE BY COMMUNIST STATES. THE EXCEPTION IS TURKEY, WHICH COVERS MOST OF THE SOUTHERN COAST.

NO AMERICAN SHIPS HAVE ENTERED THE SEA SINCE DECEMBER LAST YEAR, WHEN A VISIT BY THE USS DYESS AND THE USS TURNER PROVOKED A STRONG PROTEST BY THE SOVIET UNION TO THE TURKISH GOVERNMENT FOR ALLOWING THEM PASSAGE THROUGH THE TWO STRAITS.
