The President of Uganda, Major General Idi Amin, has left Ethiopia where he proposed to Emperor Haile Selassie the convening of an emergency meeting of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU).
The President of Uganda, Major General Idi Amin, has left Ethiopia where he proposed to Emperor Haile Selassie the convening of an emergency meeting of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). Uganda's standing in the organisation suffered as a result of the successful coup led by General Amin against former President Milton Obote. General Amin went to Addis Ababa to explain to African ambassadors he reasons behind the coup.
SYNOPSIS: Flags in Ethiopia were at half mast in memory of President Tubman of Liberia as President Idi Amin ??? Uganda arrived to address African nations' representatives. President Amin had flown to Addis Ababa at his own request to put his case for the coup which overthrew former President Milton Obote early this year.
Ambassadors from nations represent in the Organisation of African Un??? were present to hear the President's speech. General Amin told them that he had already spoken with Emperor Haile Selassie and requested him to convene an emergency meeting of the organisation.
Uganda's standing within the O.A.U. suffered as a result of the coup. The site for the organisation's summit, which was scheduled to be held in Kampala, was switched to Addis Ababa at the request of some members. Now General Amin is try to regain favour and so he flew to Addis Ababa, the seat of the organisation.
Just before President Amin flew back to Kampala, Emperor Haile Selassie presented his youngest son with a gold cross and chain. Then the President left to report back to his Government on the trip.
