  • Description

EFFORTS BY THE INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS, UNICEF, OTHER GROUPS AND VARIOUS INDIVIDUALS TO CARE FOR THE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF REFUGEES IN BIAFRA ARE UNDER WAY EVEN AS FEDERAL NIGERIAN TROOPS CLOSE IN.

AT UBOMA, IN OKIGWI, SOME OF THE THOUSANDS OF STARVING REFUGEES ARE BEING FED AT AN INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS CENTRE.

UNICEF HIGH-PROTEIN FOOD COMBATS PROTEIN DEFICIENCY, OR KWASHIOR-KOR -- A VERY COMMON ILLNESS AMONG THE REFUGEE CHILDREN.

AT ORODO, SIX TO EIGHT MILES FROM THE BATTLE-FRONT, REFUGEES GATHER FROM THE BUSH WHERE THEY HAVE BEEN HIDING. FROM ORODO, THEY ARE SENT TO REFUGEE CAMPS. IN THE SOUTH EASTERN STATES OF NIGERIA -- WHICH WAS BIAFRAN TERRITORY -- RED CROSS SOURCES ESTIMATE THAT THERE ARE 250,000 REGISTERED REFUGEES AND UP TO 200,000 STILL HIDING IN THE BUSH.

AMONG THE PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS WORKING IN RELIEF IS DOCTOR JOHN TAFFE, AN IRISHMAN, WHO VOLUNTEERED TO COME TO BIAFRA FOR HIS SUMMER HOLIDAYS. THE DOCTOR'S TENT IS NEAR THE MORNING STAR SCHOOL. THE CHILD DR. TAFFE IS EXAMINING IS SUFFERING FROM MALNUTRITION. AS WITH MANY OTHER STARVING CHILDREN, THE HAIR IS GINGERY, THE BELLIES ARE BLOATED, AND THE SKIN WRINKLES SO THAT A FINGER TOUCH LEAVES A PRINT.

AT ORLU, VOLUNTEERS FEED THE CHILDREN WITH FISH, RICE, SOYA BEANS AND SOME MEAT. THEIR MOTHERS ARE KEPT AWAY BECAUSE THE RELIEF WORKERS FEEL THAT SOME MAY TAKE THE FOOD AWAY FROM THE CHILDREN AND EAT IT THEMSELVES.

ON TUESDAY (24 SEPTEMBER) INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS OFFICIALS SAID THAT THE ORGANISATION HAD FLOWN A TOTAL OF 905 TONS OF RELIEF SUPPLIES IN 105 FLIGHTS SINCE IT BEGAN NIGHTLY MERCY RUNS INTO BIAFRA THREE WEEKS AGO. THE RED CROSS SAID MORE RECENTLY THAT A FAR LARGER AMOUNT OF SUPPLIES WAS NECESSARY TO ALLEVIATE THE PLIGHT OF THE REFUGEES. THE RED CROSS ALSO SAID THAT A LAND CORRIDOR WAS THE BEST WAY TO ACHIEVE THIS. AGREEMENT BETWEEN FEDERAL NIGERIA AND BIAFRA ON A LAND CORRIDOR FOR SUPPLIES HAS NOT YET BEEN REACHED.

IN LAGOS TODAY (FRIDAY) LORD SHEPHERD, MINISTER OF STATE AT BRITAIN'S COMMONWEALTH OFFICE, SAID HE WAS BITTERLY DISAPPOINTED AT THE BIAFRAN REFUSAL TO PUT AN END TO THE FIGHTING WITH FEDERAL NIGERIA.

LIEUTENANT COLONEL ODUMEGWU OJUKWU, THE BIAFRAN LEADER, YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) DECLARED THAT RUMOURS THAT THE SECESSIONIST EASTERN REGION WAS ABOUT TO GIVE UP THE STRUGGLE WERE UTTER NONSENSE AND ADDED.

"IN MANY RESPECTS THE WAR IS FAR FROM ENDING. IN FACT IT IS JUST BEGINNING."
