Hundreds of Arab students staged a noisy sit-in a support of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) at the Bir Zeit College, near Ramallah in the Israeli occupied West Ban on Tuesday (11 November). They chanted such slogans as "PLO - ISRAEL NO", and the walls were daubed with slogans such as "The arresting campaign will not stop our movement. PLO".
The previous day there had been clashes between the students and police. The Dean of the College, Dr. Gabi Baramki, said that only one of the four students from his college who had been taken into custody had been released.
College staff said that on Monday (10 November) Israeli troops had entered the College grounds looking for demonstrators. One student at a nearby hostel was hit and injured by a batch. They also said that the soldiers burned Palestinian flags carried by some of the demonstrators.
Meanwhile the Israeli Prime Minister, Mr. Yitzhak Rabin, was telling the Knesset in Jerusalem that the United Nations itself, and not Israel, was the victim of the three resolutions on the Middle East - including the anti-Zionist vote - passed by the United Nations General Assembly on Monday (10 November). He also reaffirmed that Israel would not attend a reconvened Geneva Peace Conference if the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) were invited.
Mr. Rabin repeated the gist of these remarks at a news conference held after the knesset debate. This film is serviced with an extract from Mr. Rabin's remarks at the Jerusalem news conference. The following is a transcript of the extract.
