Tennis -- and in the World Doubles Championship Finals in Britain, the two young Americans, John McEnroe and Peter Fleming methodically destroyed llie Nastase of Rumania and Sherwood Stewart of the United States on Sunday (7 January ), to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 6-1.

SYNOPSIS: Stewart's winning serve gave the east-west pair the first set, six games to three. They had been considered unlikely candidates for the final, and did well to defeat the defending champions Wojtek Fibak of Poland and Tom Okker of Holland on Saturday (6 January) in the semi-finals. Steward had been a late replacement for Nastase's original partner Victor Pecci of Paraguay. McEnroe and Fleming first teamed as a doubles pair seven months ago, and have won several big titles since then.

After the first set, McEnroe and Fleming settled down, and it soon became obvious that Nastase and Stewart were doomed. The winners' performance was undoubtedly their best of the week, as they began to blast their opponents off the court.

By the third set, the American players were supreme. McEnroe is nineteen and Fleming twenty-three. Their youth played its part in overwhelming the thirty-two year old, Nastase and Stewart. McEnroe's speed and incredible reactions allowed him repeatedly to produce winning shots from near-impossible positions.

It took the two Americans just under two hours to win their most important doubles title to date. They didn't lose any of their five matches in these world championships. McEnroe's victory after his recent triumph in several singles events confirmed his brilliant promise, and built his confidence for the forthcoming Masters Championships in New York. Winning the doubles championship meant more than just prestige for the Americans, who picked up forty thousand pounds Sterling (eighty thousand dollars), with the defeated Nastase and Stewart sharing second prize of twenty thousand pounds Sterling (forty thousand dollars).
