  • Description

THE UNITED NATIONS SPECIAL COMMITTEE WAS TOLD YESTERDAY THAT DURING THE PAST FEW WEEKS. ARAB COMMANDS HAVE INTERRUPTED NORMAL ACTIVITIES IN U.N. REFUGEE CAMPS IN LEBANON. LAWRENCE MICHELMORE, COMMISSIONER GENERAL OF THE U.N. RELIEF AND WORK AGENCY (UNWRA) SAID HOWEVER HE WAS SATISFIED HAT THE INTEGRITY OF UNRWA'S OPERATIONS HAD BEEN MAINTAINED.

THERE WERE REPORTS LAST WEEK THAT MOST OF THE UNWRA CAMPS IN LEBANON HAD BEEN TAKEN OVER BY THE COMMANDOS.

AT THE OPENING OF THE SPECIAL COMMITTEE'S DEBATE ON UNRWA OPERATIONS, MICHELMORE CONCEDED THAT ARMED MEN HAD BEEN PRESENT IN A NUMBER OF CAMPS AND THAT THE LEBANESE GOVERNMENT'S REGULAR POLICE AND OTHER STAFF HAD BEEN ABSENT. BUT HE ADDED THAT UNRWA ASSISTANCE WAS BEING MAINTAINED TO THE REFUGEES AND WAS NOT BEING DIVERTED TO OTHER PURPOSES.

THE AGENCY LOOKS AFTER 1,400,000 REFUGEES IN THE MIDDLES EAST.
