  • Description

Cato Manor, the huge African township outside Durban, Natal, quietened down Apr 3, as units of the South African Police and Army moved into the area to ensure the recent wave of violence did not flare up again. Roadblocks were removed and the bus service was able to operate once more.

Policemen searched all passengers for weapons, before they boarded the bus that would take them into Durban. 'Saracen' armoured cars patrolled the township and prevented Africans from gathering in large numbers. Light aircraft acted as observers for the army units stationed around the township.

Inside the township, Africans took advantage of the quiet atmosphere and the day developed into a normal Sunday. Women cooked for their families and caught up on the jobs that have been neglected in the past week.

At night the whole area was illuminated by powerful searchlights which swept through the township picking out the tin shacks and tumbledown houses that make up the greater part of Cato Manor.
