INDIAN AND PAKISTANI ARMY LEADERS HAVE AGREED THAT STEPS SHOULD BE TAKEN TO ENSURE THAT THERE IS NO FURTHER TROUBLE OR TENSION ON THE INDO-PAKISTANI BORDER.

THE AGREEMENT WAS REACHED AFTER A MEETING BETWEEN THE INDIAN CHIEF OF ARMY STAFF, GENERAL P.P. KUMARAMANGALAM, AND THE PAKISTANI COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF DESIGNATE, LIEUTENANT-GENERAL A.M. YAHYA KHAN, WHO FLEW TO NEW DELHI ON TUESDAY.

THE TWO MILITARY LEADERS TALKED FOR TWO AND A HALF HOURS YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY). BEFORE FLYING BACK TO PAKISTAN, GENERAL KHAN SAID: "WE DO NOT WANT ANY TROUBLE ON OUR BORDERS AND WE HAVE AGREED WE SHOULD TAKE STEPS TO ENSURE THAT WE DO NOT HAVE ANY FURTHER TROUBLE OR TENSION".

AN INDIAN DEFENCE MINISTRY SPOKESMAN SAID IT HAD BEEN AGREED THAT TROOP MOVEMENTS IN THE BORDER REGIONS SHOULD BE AVOIDED EXCEPT WHEN PREVIOUS NOTICE HAD BEEN GIVEN. THE SPOKESMAN SAID GENERAL KHAN HAD EXPLAINED RECENT PAKISTANI TROOP MOVEMENTS WHICH INDIA HAD ALLEGED HAD CAUSED TENSION. THEY WERE FOR EXERCISES AND ROTATION THE GENERAL HAD SAID.

THIS HAS BEEN THE THIRD MEETING BETWEEN INDIAN AND PAKISTANI MILITARY LEADERS SINCE THE TASHKENT DECLARATION LAST JANUARY. THE DECLARATION PAVED THE WAY FOR RESTORING RELATIONS DISRUPTED BY THE FIGHTING OVER KASHMIR LAST SEPTEMBER.
