    The Black Sash movement (a women's protest movement) stages a demonstration in Adderley Street, the main street of Cape Town, against a determination by the Minister of Labour (Senator J. de Klerk) reserving certain specialized jobs for Whitear in the clothing industry. Unless exemption is granted, Coloured worker may not occupy these posts. The Minister has, to begin with, granting exemptions to all clothing factories, but the determination is seen as a threat hanging over the heads of 35,000 Coloured workers who occupy these posts in various parts of the country.
