Background: AT A REHEARSAL YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) ON MOUNT OLYMPIA, IN SOUTHERN GREECE, THE SACRED FLAME WAS KINDLED FOR ITS DESPATCH BY AIR TO TOKYO AND THE 1964 OLYMPIC GAMES IN OCTOBER.

THE ACTUAL FLAME-KINDLING CEREMONY WAS HELD TODAY (FRIDAY) IN THE PRESENCE OF KING CONSTANTINE OF GREECE.

THE FLAME WAS KINDLED AT A MIRROR FOCUSING THE RAYS OF THE SUN BY THE GREEK ACTRESS, ALECA KATSELIS, DRESSED AS A HIGH PRIESTESS WITH AN ENTOURAGE OF SIXTEEN GIRLS WEARING THE ROBES OF PRIESTESSES.

IT WAS TRANSFERRED TO AN EARTHENWARE BOWL ACCOMPANIED BY THE CHANTING OF HYMNS TO ZEUS, FATHER OF THE GODS, THANKING HIM FOR SENDING HIS LIGHT DOWN TO EARTH.

THE BOWL WAS THEN CARRIED BY THE HIGH PRIESTESS THROUGH THE RUINS OF THE ANCIENT TEMPLE OF HERA, WIFE OF ZEUS, TO THE ORIGINAL OLYMPIC STADIUM.

A TORCH KINDLED FROM THE FLAME IN THE BOWL WAS HANDED TO THE FIRST OF THE RUNNERS, THE GREEK SPRINTER MARCELLOS.

IN TODAY'S ACTUAL CEREMONY, THE TORCH WAS LIT FROM THE BOWL AND HANDED TO THE RUNNER BY KING CONSTANTINE. IN THE FILMED REHEARSAL IT WAS DONE BY THE HIGH PRIESTESS.

THEN BEGAN THE RELAY RUN TO ATHENS, WHICH IS EXPECTED TO TAKE THIRTY-SIX HOURS, WITH SOME THREE-HUNDRED-AND-FORTY ATHLETE-RUNNERS TAKING PART.

KING CONSTANTINE WILL BE IN THE OLYMPIC STADIUM, AT ATHENS, WHEN THE TORCH ARRIVE. HE WILL RECEIVE THE TORCH FROM THE RUNNER AND HAND IT OVER TO ANOTHER, WHO WILL CARRY IT TO ATHENS AIRPORT FOR DISPATCH BY SPECIAL PLANE TO TOKYO.
