  • Description

SOUTH KOREAN TROOPS IN SOUTH VIETNAM ARE RESETTLING 16,000 REFUGEES UPROOTED FROM THEIR HOMES DURING A MASSIVE SWEEP BY THE SOUTH KOREAN TIGER DIVISION THROUGH VIET CONG TERRITORY ABOUT 255 MILES NORTH-EAST OF SAIGON. THE SOUTH KOREAN SWEEP, CALLED "OPERATION MENG HO" (OPERATION FIERCE TIGER) ENDED LAST TUESDAY, AND IS REPORTED TO HAVE RESULTED IN 153 VIET CONG KILLED AND 375 TAKEN PRISONER.

THE REFUGEES ARE BEING RE-HOUSED IN BINH THANH, ABOUT 23 MILES SOUTH OF QUI NHON ON THE CENTRAL EASTERN COAST WHERE THE SOUTH KOREAN TIGER DIVISION HAS ITS HEADQUARTERS. THE FIRST TASK OF THE SOUTH KOREANS WAS TO DISTRIBUTE SEVERAL TONS OF RICE. MOST OF THE REFUGEES HAD NOT HAD A PROPER MEAL FOR SEVERAL DAYS.

MANY SOUTH KOREAN ARMY MEDICAL ORDERLIES WERE ON HAND TO ATTEND TO LONG-NEGLECTED SORES. SINCE THEY CAME FROM A VIET CONG AREA, THE REFUGEES WERE INTERROGATED AND A FEW FOUND TO BE VIET CONG SUSPECTS WERE TAKEN AWAY FOR FURTHER QUESTIONING.
