  • Description

Metal workers from several French industries staged protest marches in four French cities on Thursday (21 March) to support wage demands.

In Paris, hundreds of workers from the aircraft component manufacturers, Rateau, marched through the streets carrying placards and banners condemning the rise in the cost of living. They surrounded the union offices and called on M. Ambroise Roux, the head of the firm, to open discussions.

Protest demonstrators were also organised by metalworkers in Bordeaux, Saint-Nazaire and Mulhouse.

In Paris a twenty-four hour strike by electricity and gas workers in support of wage claims plunged Paris into darkness. Underground trains were affected, and at Air France almost all the staff joined in a twenty-four hour stoppage. Their protest was directed at the economy measures the company had taken to meet the energy crisis.
