  • Description

South Africa's heavyweight champion, Jimmy Richards, drew on points with world sixth rated heavyweight, Henry Clark, in Johannesburg on Saturday (23 August).

About 5000 people saw the surprise result at the city's Wembley stadium. But many observers felt the American, a former sparring partner to George Foreman, should have won.

Clark has also fought highly rated heavyweights Ken Norton, had Foster and former champion Sonny Liston.

The American was slow to start and Richards stood off nervously, occasionally jabbing.

Clark dropped the South African with a swinging left in the fifth round, but Richards was back on his feet so quickly referee Stap Christodoulou didn't even start a count.

Clark was at his most effective during the middle rounds, crashing a left hook into the South African's jaw, then staggered the local fighter with three savage left hooks into his body.

Clark was slow at times, and gave Richards chances to get into clinches. The American's reflexes weren't as fast sometimes as would be expected from a top-ranked fighter.

But he had taken on the fight at short notice, and had only five days to prepare himself.

He finished the fight strongly in the tenth round culminating in the hard right to the South African's head, right on the bell. Richards tool Clark's hand and raised it, probably more for support than to signal the end. But referee Christodoulou made it a draw.
