    FIREMEN, SUPPORTED BY ARMED POLICE AND SOLDIERS, FOUGHT THE FIRES WHILE SECURITY FORCES CORDONED OFF THE AREA. PATROLLING SECURITY FORCES WERE UNDER ATTACK BY SNIPER FIRE.

    SUNDAY'S VIOLENCE FOLLOWED SEVERAL DAYS OF UNEASY CALM IN THE MALAYSIAN CAPITAL AFTER A WEEK OF SAVAGE CHINESE-MALAY RACIAL CLASHES IN WHICH AT LEAST 167 PEOPLE DIED.

    POLICE ANNOUNCED 354 MORE ARRESTS TODAY, BRINGING TO 4,481 THE TOTAL NUMBERS OF PEOPLE HELD SINCE THE RIOTING BEGAN. MOST OF THEM ARE CURFEW BREAKERS, BUT THEY ALSO INCLUDE THUGS, SECRET SOCIETY MEMBERS, POLITICIANS AND ALLEGED HARDCORE COMMUNISTS.
