  • Description

IN RAWALPINDI, TWO-HUNDRED PAKISTANI DOCTORS LAST WEEK VOLUNTEER FOR SERVICE WITH THE ARMED FORCES. BASIC TRAINING -- MARCHING ON PARADE -- IS BEING GIVEN IN THE GROUNDS OF ONE OF THE HOSPITALS IN THE CAPITAL. THEIR INSTRUCTOR IS A RETIRED LIEUTENANT RECALLED FOR SERVICE DURING THE EMERGENCY.

AT THE SAME HOSPITAL, VOLUNTEER NURSES ARE CARING FOR TROOPS WOUNDED IN THE UNDECLARED WAR OVER KASHMIR. OPERATIONS -- MOST OF THEM FOR REMOVING SHRAPNEL AND BULLETS -- ARE INCREASING DAILY, BUT OUR CAMERAMAN REPORTED THAT CASUALTY FIGURES WERE NOT AVAILABLE.

SOME INDICATION HOWEVER CAN BE GAINED FROM THE TANK LOSSES ON BOTH SIDES. PAKISTAN CLAIMS TO HAVE PUT NEARLY 500 INDIAN TANKS OUT OF ACTION. INDIA CLAIMS DESTROYING NEARLY 400 PAKISTANI TANKS, WHILE LOSING ABOUT A HUNDRED.
