  • Description

President Eisenhower received and overwhelming welcome by South Koreans in the capital, Seoul June 19 - the day he was due to arrive in Tokyo but for the cancellation of the visit.

In an airport speech the President said the visit vividly recalled the memory of many month when Korea was a rallying place for the fighting men of the free world.

In Seoul and estimated million people packed the presidential rout as Eisenhower and South Korean prime Minister Huh Chung drove in a Motorcade. So dense was the crowd that their car at times only progressed a few feet at a time. At one time a well-wisher grasped Eisenhower's hand so strongly that the President was almost pulled from the car.

The visit came ten years after the start of the Korean war, and seven and a half years after Mr. Eisenhower, as president-elect, flew to Seoul to weigh the prospects of a cease-fire. The Korean truce became an early landmark of his Administration.

President Eisenhower arrived at Honolulu, Hawaii, June 20 for a three-day golfing holiday before flying back to Washington at the end of his Far East tour.
