    It was announced in the Syrian capital of Damascus on Thursday (9 February) that later this month President Assad will make an official visit to the Soviet Union. No exact dates were given. President Assad last visited the Soviet Union in April 1977. He will be the third hard-line Arab leader to visit the Soviet Union this year. Algerian President Houari Boumedienne paid a visit last month, and the Prime Minister of South Yemen went earlier this month.

    Background: Following his re-election to a second seven-year term of office, Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad on Friday (10 February) made a televised address to the Syrian people, who had backed his re-election almost unanimously. Out of a reported turn-out of 97 per cent, less than one per cent were against him serving a second term. During the broadcast, President Assad looked back over his first seven years in office, and thanked the Syrian people for their confidence in him.
