Background: ANNCR: At Port Columbus, Ohio, Edward J.Williams, Vice-President of Rockwell Standard, and Mrs, Jerrie Mock, Columbus Ohio housewife, check out an Aero-Commander-200 aircraft before she takes off in a try to break a world speed record for single engine planes.Jerrie, who last year became the first woman pilot an airplane 'round the world', takes off in the standard production model of the Aero Commander 200.A chase plane trails her as she flies a triangular course from Port Columbus to Henderson, West Virginia - thence to Belair, Ohio - and back to Port Columbus. Her air speed is carefully checked as she follows the prescribed course. She's credited with an average speed of 203.858 statute miles per hour over the 500 mile route. The existing record is held by Czechoslovakia and was set in 1956.And as Jerrie brings her craft back to the runway, the word is out: In a time of one-hour-and-31-minutes, she's brought the record home to the U.S.It's unofficial till confirmed by the National Aeronautic Association. But her daughter's not waiting till then.
