Background: Death toll in the Orissa cyclona disaster has now risen to 10,000. Another 100,000 people were believed to be homeless. The coastal areas were hardest hit. High winds drove in a tidal wave which destroyed boats and port facilities, inundated several villages and thousands of acres (hectares) of agricultural land.

A massive relief programme has been mounted by the Indian government. Work teams are already repairing damaged power lines, railway tracks and roads. Train serviced are being rapidly restored. Indian Air Force planes are dropping relief supplies to more isolated areas, together with anti-cholera vaccines and medicines.
