  • Description

Film taken near Romilly on the Seine, Sept. 9, shows the scene of an unsuccessful attempt, the previous evening, on the life of President Charles De Gaulle.

The incident occurred between Romilly and Nogent, on the road from Paris and to the Presidential Residence at Colombey-Les-Des-Eguises. General De Gaulle passed the spot in a car travelling at 65 m.p.h., which also carried his wife and an ADC and was accompanied by a police escort.

A heavy charge had been hidden beneath a pile of sand by the roadside. It was loosely attached to a can of petrol, and wires buried eight inches in the ground connected with a small group of trees on a hillock 200 yards away. When the detonator was set off electrically, the petrol caught fire and a sheet of flame shot across the road. Flying debris smashed a headlight on the President's car. No further damage was done as the 8-lb plastic charge failed to ignite.

General De Gaulle ordered his chauffeur to drive on for some distance, then turned to look at the scene of the explosion, and finally continued his journey with the remark: "A joke in remarkably bad taste". A communique on the incident was issued from the Elysee Palace about 14 hours later.

A man was arrested at a nearby restaurant after he had lost his car in a ditch. The wrecked vehicle contained arms, explosives and field glasses. The arrested man described as a member of the OAS, an extremist military movement led by Ex-General Salan - revealed the names of three associates.

At a press conference in Paris, Sept. 9, the French Minister of the Interior, M. Frey, said that a number of important OAS members had been arrested during the night. These included the Generals Paul Vanurem and Jean Crevecoeur. The arrest of another man involved in the bomb attempt was reported Sept. 10. His name was not given.
