  • Description

TROOPS OF THE SOUTH KOREAN "TIGER" DIVISION, SEEKING OUT VIETCONG IN THE PHU-CAT MOUNTAINS OF SOUTH VIETNAM, ABOUT 18 MILES (30 KILOMETRES) NORTH OF SAIGON, ARE REPORTED TO HAVE KILLED OR CAPTURED 2,000 SINCE LAST SUNDAY (9 OCT), WHILE ON OPERATIONS WITH UNITED STATES AND SOUTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT FORCES.

UNDER THE CODE-NAME "OPERATION MAENGHO-6", WHICH BEGAN ON 23 SEPTEMBER, THE "TIGERS" DISCOVERED THREE NATURAL CAVES. THERE FOLLOWED BITTER HAND-TO-HAND FIGHTING WITH THE VIETCONG IN THE CAVES, WHICH RESULTED IN 51 VIETCONG KILLED AND 17 CAPTURED. THE KOREAN CASUALTIES WERE REPORTED BY MILITARY AUTHORITIES IN SAIGON TO BE LIGHT.

HOWEVER, THE ASSAULT ON THE AREA HAS LEFT SOME 16,000 VIETNAMESE PEASANTS HOMELESS. THEY REPRESENT ROUGHLY A THIRD OF THE ENTIRE POPULATION OF THE 620 SQUARE MILE (1,600 SQUARE KILOMETRE) REGION OF RICE FIELDS, SALT-FLATS AND MOUNTAINS.

TO HELP BRING RELIEF,THE SOUTH KOREAN "TIGERS" HAVE SET UP A REFUGEE CENTRE TO COPE WITH THE PROBLEM OF THE HOMELESS. GROUPS OF BEDRAGGLED AND BEWILDERED REFUGEES, MOST OF THEM WOMEN AND CHILDREN, ARE POURING INTO THE SCREENING CENTRES AND CAMPS TO BEGIN THE LENGTHY PROCESS OF RE-SETTLEMENT.
