    500 AMERICANS IN PARIS CELEBRATED INDEPENDENCE DAY TODAY (MONDAY) BY DEMONSTRATING AGAINST THEIR GOVERNMENT. THE PRETESTED AGAINST WASHINGTON'S POLICY ON VIETNAM AND APPEALED FOR A PEACEFUL SETTLEMENT TO THE WAR. THEY MARCHED ON THE U.S. EMBASSY, WHERE A PETITION WAS PRESENTED.

    THE PROTEST WAS ORGANISED BY A GROUP CALLING ITSELF THE PARIS-AMERICAN COMMITTEE FOR JULY 4TH DEMONSTRATION. THE PETITION, SIGNED BY 100,000 PARISIENS, WAS DRAWN UP BY ANOTHER GROUP GOING UNDER THE NAME OF THE RIVER SEINE COUNCIL FOR PEACE.

    SIMILAR DEMONSTRATIONS TO COINCIDE WITH INDEPENDENCE DAY WERE HELD BY OTHER ORGANISATIONS IN PARIS AND ELSEWHERE IN WESTERN EUROPE.
