    THE FIRST RHODESIAN-BUILT VEHICLE FROM THE JOINT ISUZU/ROVER PLANT IN SALISBURY WAS DELIVERED YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY). IT IS THE FIRST TIME A JAPANESE VEHICLE HAS BEEN PRODUCED ON A RHODESIAN ASSEMBLY LINE.

    THE FIRST VEHICLE WAS A HEAVY TRUCK. SOON PRODUCTION WILL INCLUDE LIGHTER VEHICLES AND EVENTUALLY FAMILY CARS. ISUZU FIRST BEGAN IMPORTING ITS VEHICLES INTO RHODESIA IN 1964 AND BY THE END OF 1967, THE JOINT COMPANY PLANS TO BE PRODUCING ITS FULL RANGE AT THE ROVER PLANT IN SALISBURY. THE TWO COMPANIES ARE NAMED ISUZU VEHICLES LIMITED, A RHODESIAN COMPANY, AND ROVER RHODESIA (PRIVATE) LIMITED.

    IT IS PLANNED THAT LOCALLY PRODUCED ACCESSORIES SUCH AS BATTERIES, TYRES AND UPHOLSTERY WILL BE INCORPORATED IN LATER VEHICLES PRODUCED AT THE PLANT. THE COMPANY SAID ITS PRODUCTION WOULD BE ABSORBED IMMEDIATELY IN LOCAL DEMAND BUT THERE MIGHT BE POSSIBILITIES FOR EXPORT DEVELOPMENT LATER.
