  • Description

THE 'FRANCE' A POTENTIAL FRENCH CHALLENGER FOR THE AMERICA'S CUP YACHT RACE NEXT SEPTEMBER, IS UNDERGOING TESTS AT THE BRITTANY RESORT OF TRINITE SUR MER. THE FRENCH BOAT WILL MEET THE AUSTRALIAN YACHT 'GRETEL II' IN AUGUST TO DECIDE WHO WILL COMPETE AGAINST THE UNITED STATES FOR THE CUP.

THE 21 TON 'FRANCE' WAS BUILT HIGH UP IN THE JURA MOUNTAINS OF EASTERN FRANCE -- ABOUT AS FAR AWAY FROM THE SEA AS IT IS POSSIBLE TO GET IN THE COUNTRY. NO-ONE HAD EVER DESIGNED A YACHT OF THE 12-METRE CLASS IN FRANCE BEFORE, LET ALONE BUILD ONE, AND NONE OF THE HUNDREDS OF BOAT YARDS SCATTERED ALONG THE COAST LINE WAS FITTED TO BUILD SUCH A LARGE BOAT FOR THE WORLD-FAMOUS RACE.

ANDRE MAURIC, THE LEADING DESIGNER IN FRANCE, WAS BROUGHT IN FOR THE JOB. BEFORE PUTTING PENCIL TO PAPER HE WENT TO THE U.S. TO STUDY THEIR IDEAS AND METHODS, A WISE MOVE SINCE THE AMERICANS HAVE NEVER LOST THE CUP SINCE THEY FIRST CAPTURED IT FROM BRITAIN IN 1851.

'TRINITE' WAS CHOSEN AS THE FRENCH TRAINING LOCATION BECAUSE IT PROVIDES THE NEAREST EQUIVALENT TO THE CONDITIONS FOUND OFF NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND, WHERE THE RACE IS RUN.

EXPERTS GIVE THE FRENCH MORE THAN AN EVEN CHANCE TO BEAT AUSTRALIA.
