  • Description

During an inspection of newly-formed Kampala anti-bandit units on Friday (21 July), President Idi Amin of Uganda proclaimed the success of the units in fighting the bandit menace, and particularly in the field of corruption in the police force.

In an address at Makindye Military Police Headquarters, General Amin stressed that corruption among police officials was one of the major causes of the spread of 'Kondoism' or banditry. He said that anyone who was corrupt, must be arrested immediately. "Even I, Amin, if I become corrupt, I should be arrested". He went on to announce the arrest of a number of police officials for complicity in armed robbery.

He had previously toured the special unit's headquarters at Naguru Police college, where he was shown weapons, forged numberplates and papers used by the bandits. He also interviewed handcuffed 'Kondos'.

When he came to office, President Amin had personally taken over and re-organised the police department, later incorporating it with the Ministry of Defence.
