Background: IN A CEREMONY AT HOPSTEN, WESTPHALIA, GERMANY, DEC 12, GENERAL JOSEPH KAMMHUBER, HEAD OF THE WEST GERMAN LUFTWAFFE, HANDED OVER CONTROL OF FIFTY F-84 "THUNDERSTREAK" FIGHTER-BOMBER AIRCRAFT TO THE 2ND ALLIED TACTICAL AIR FORCE OF NATO, COMMANDED BY AIR MARSHAL SIR JOHN GRANDY OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE.

THE "THUNDERSTREAKS" WERE THE LAST TO GO INTO SERVICE WITH THE COMPARATIVELY NEW WEST GERMAN AIR FORCE. NEW SQUADRONS WILL BE EQUIPPED WITH F-104 "STARFIGHTERS" - 600 OF WHICH WILL BE BUILT IN WEST GERMANY UNDER LICENCE - WOULD FORM THE BACKBONE OF THE FUTURE LUFTWAFFE.

NINE NEW WEST GERMAN AIR FORCE SQUADRONS ARE BEING FORMED. SOME SHOULD BE IN SERVICE EARLY IN 1962, ALONGSIDE THE EXISTING EIGHT SQUADRONS ALLOCATED TO NATO, WHOSE PLANNING CALLS FOR AN ULTIMATE WEST GERMAN AIR STRENGTH OF 20 SQUADRONS.
