  • Description

The rich 1972 Cheltenham Gold Cup was won in England on Thursday (16 March) by the Irish mare, Glencaraig Lady.

Favourite for the event was the Australian jumper, Crisp, but on a track described as "dead" he was unable to match the finishing run of the first three place-getters and finished a weakening fourth.

The Australian horse raced well back for most of the 3 1/2 mile journey and moved up only as the field turned for home. At one point in the straight he was third, but drifted badly during the final stages.

The winner, Glencaraig Lady, had the misfortune of falling at her two previous starts at Cheltenham and was at odds of six-to-one. Royal Toss was second, and The Dikler third.

(The Choltenham Gold Cup is generally considered the most coveted trophy in the English jumping season. Although the race doesn't match the Grand National in stake money, it is considered a fairer test of a thoroughbred's ability than the gruelling Aintree event. This year the Cheltenham Gold Cup carried a record stake of GBP15,255 for the winner).

SYNOPSIS: Racing - and the Australian champion, Crisp went out favourite for this year's rich Cheltenham Gold Cup in England.

The pace was moderate at the start of the three-and-a-half mile journey and jockey Richard Pitman decided to hold Crisp in behind the field.

At the last fence however, Crisp was still a long way from the leaders and appeared to be weakening. In front - a tussle between the Irish mare, Glencaraig Lady, Royal Toss and the Dikler.

As they race to the finish, glencaraig Lady reaches the front to win a narrow margin.

For Glencaraig Lady - a triumph; at her previous two visits to Cheltenham she had fallen.

Glenoaraig Lady was at odds of six-to-one.
