  • Description

In the Ivory Coast's capital Abidjan, the first regional African seminar on illegal drugs has been held. The seminar lasted ten days and was aimed at informing law enforcement officers from countries south of the Sahara Desert about the growing problem of drug abuse in Africa.

SYNOPSIS: The seminar's venue was Abidjan's labour exchange building. Here delegations from the host country, and Nigeria, Togo, Benin, and Senegal met to listen to speakers from the U.N., Interpol, and French Customs.

Each country sent a delegation of ten people. They included members of the police, the social services and agricultural ministries.

Drug abuse is rapidly growing on the African continent. In 1976, the Ivory Coast Drug Squad dealt with 98 drug offences. One year later, in 1977, this had increased to 108. The offences arose mainly from the abuse of Cannabis, obtained from the Hemp plant.

The delegates heard lectures on the identification of suspected substances, police techniques to control trafficking, and the treatment and rehabilitation of drug users.
