Background: Corregidor, the island fortress at the entrance to Manila Bay, fell 32 years ago to the invading Japanese forces during World War Two. It was here that Filipino and American forces made their last stand.

On the island no longer scarred by signs of battle, representatives of the three forces involved yesterday (Monday, May 6th) came together peacefully for the 32nd anniversary of the fall of Corregidor.

President Ferdinand Marcos Highlighted the nationwide observance in the Philippines with his participation and later speech in ceremonies on the island itself. Also attending to place wreaths for the fallen defenders were the American Ambassador, Mr. William Sullivan and the Japanese Envoy, Mr. Toshio Urabe.

During the ceremonies and speeches, President Marcos reviewed troops, a 21-gun salute was fired and members of the Philippine and U.S. Armed Forces gave a display of parachute jumping.
