  • Description

Greek and Turkish Cypriots began talks in Nicosia on Monday (12 May) to discuss the possibility of setting up a joint Central Government after more than a decade of division.

A committee -- set up after last month's talks in Vienna, Austria -- met for two hours in the presence of Mr. L. Weckman Munoz, United Nations special representative in Cyprus.

A U.N. spokesman said the meeting discussed and settled procedural matters and had a preliminary general exchange of views. It will meet again on Wednesday (14 May).

The committee made up of three members from each side is one of several which discuss separate aspects of a possible reunion between Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

Other committees will discuss the proposed re-opening of Nicosia International Airport, humanitarian issues concerning refugees, people isolated on either side of the ceasefire line, and missing persons following the fighting last July.
