U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara got some rough heckling from Harvard University students Monday (7 November) after he had addressed a student group on the campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts across the river from Boston.
McNamara reminded the demonstrators he was a guest on their campus. But police finally had to intervene to clear a path through the mob.
The United State Defense chief told the students that when he was a student at the University of California at Berkeley he was tougher and more courteous than the hecklers. He tried to answer their questions but was repeatedly shouted down. The demonstrators were protesting United States involvement in the South Vietnamese war.
