  • Description

THE AUSTRALIAN SOCCER TEAM BEAT JAPAN 3-1 IN THE FIRST MATCH OF A TRIANGULAR QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT FOR THE WORLD CUP IN SEOUL ON FRIDAY (OCTOBER 10). RHODESIA WERE ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED TO PLAY IN THE TOURNAMENT IN SEOUL, BUT WAS UNABLE TO COMPETE WHEN THE SOUTH KOREAN GOVERNMENT REFUSED TO GRANT VISAS TO THE YEAR.

IN FRIDAY'S GAME, THE AUSTRALIAN SIDE LAUNCHED QUICKLY INTO THE ATTACK, AND SOON HAD THE JAPANESE DEFENCE IN TROUBLE. THIS EARLY DOMINANCE PAID OFF WITH A GOAL BY RIGHT-WINGER TOM MCCOLL AFTER ONLY SIX MINUTES.

DESPITE THIS EARLY DISADVANTAGE, JAPAN FOUGHT BACK TO GET ON TERMS AND AFTER ELEVEN MINUTES WATANABE SUCCEEDED IN LEVELLING THE SCORE.

AFTER THE INTERVAL, HOWEVER, AUSTRALIA TOOK CONTROL, WITH SECOND-HALF GOALS COMING FROM SKIPPER JOHN WARREN AFTER 51 MINUTES AND FROM RAY BAARTS 17 MINUTES LATER.

THE THIRD TEAM IN THE SEOUL TOURNAMENT IS SOUTH KOREA. ALL THE TEAMS MEET TWICE, AND THE EVENTUAL WINNERS WILL MEET THE BARRED RHODESIAN TEAM AT A VENUE YET TO BE DECIDED.

THE VICTORS IN THIS ENCOUNTER WILL HEAD GROUP 15A OF THE WORLD CUP COMPETITION, AND WILL GO FORWARD TO MEET THE ISRAELI TEAM, WHICH HAS ALREADY WON GROUP 15B.
