  • Description

THE SOVIET UNION TODAY (SUNDAY) CELEBRATED THE FORTY EIGHTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE OCTOBER REVOLUTION. IN WEST BERLIN, SOVIET TROOPS CROSSED FROM THE EASTERN SECTOR OF THE CITY TO LAY A WREATH AT THE RUSSIAN WAR MEMORIAL WHICH IS IN THE BRITISH SECTOR OF BERLIN.

WITH THE TROOPS CAME A DIPLOMATIC MISSION FROM EAST BERLIN HEADED BY THE SOVIET AMBASSADOR TO EAST GERMANY, MR. PIOTR ABRASSIMOV. LEADING THE SOLDIERS WAS THE COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF SOVIET FORCES IN EAST GERMANY, GENERAL KOSHEVOI.

WEST BERLINERS, AND BRITISH TROOPS WATCHED THE CEREMONY FROM A DISTANCE. THE SOLDIERS MARCHED THROUGH A GAP IN THE BARBED WIRE NOT FAR FROM THE BRANDENBURG GATE AND PARADED IN FRONT OF THE MEMORIAL. THEN THE WREATHS WERE LAID. AFTER THE CEREMONY, THE SOLDIERS WERE INSPECTED BEFORE MARCHING BACK TO THE EASTERN SECTOR.

(MEANWHILE, IN MOSCOW, THE ANNUAL MILITARY PARADE WAS HELD IN RED SQUARE, WATCHED BY THOUSANDS OF RUSSIANS. NEW ROCKETS AND WEAPONS WERE ON DISPLAY.)
