Background: Second division club Southampton scored a shock goal just nine minutes from full time to upset the favourites Manchester United and win the English Football Association (F.A.) Cup Final 1-0 at London's Wembley Stadium on Saturday (1 May).
Manchester United had been 3-1 on favourites to win the cup, but they were denied victory by Southampton's resolute and experienced defenders.
Now Manchester United -- who just weeks ago seemed set to win both the first division championship and the cup -- have been denied honours for the 1976 season. They will probably finish third in the league.
The young Manchester side dominated the early play with their fast, attacking brand of football.
Within the first ton minutes they had three shots at goal blocked by Southampton keeper Ian Turner and his defenders.
Their luck deserted them again in the second half when Irish international Sammy McIlroy headed against the cross bar with the goal mouth wide open.
Southampton's grim and determined defence eventually paid off. They relied on fast breaking strikers Mike Channon and Peter Osgood to do their attacking, backed up by winger Bobby Stokes.
Those tactics worked when, with just nine minutes to go and extra time looking inevitable, Stokes broke quickly and hammered home the winning goal.
