Background: Antonio Gomez of Venezuela won the World Boxing Association featherweight championship in Tokyo on Thursday night (September 2) when he knocked out Japan's Shozo Saijo in the fifth round of their 15-round contest. Gomez had the reigning champion on the canvas three times in the fifth round and won the bout as Saijo sank to his knees under a two-fisted onslaught from the challenger.

For the 24-year-old Saijo, it was the sixth defence of his title. It was Gomez' 35th successive victory in a 26-fight career. He lost the first bout when he made his professional debut.

SYNOPSIS: The reigning World Boxing Association featherweight champion, Shozo Saijo enters the ring in Tokyo's Metropolitan Gymnasium on Thursday night to defend his title against Antonio Gomez of Venezuela.

It was the 24-year-old champion's sixth defence of his title. Saijo is wearing the light trunks and Gomez the dark.

The 25-year-old Venezuelan - father of six children - was in command of the fight for most of the distance.

In the fifth round Gomez began stalking his man and finally dropped him.

But as the challenger moved in for the kill, the game Japanese champion fought back bringing the crowd to its feet as he hit Gomez with blistering left and right.

Opening up the fifth round Gomez began stalking his opponent again and dropped him to the canvas with a crashing right hook to the side of the face. Saijo staggered to his feet but took the mandatory eight count. Immediately Gomez closed in and another powerful right put the champion to the canvas again.

Saijo beat the count but was finally pinned in his own corner where he was almost defenceless as Gomez bored in with a two-fisted attack that finally spelt the end for the popular Japanese champion.

For Gomez it was his 35th successive victory after a lone defeat in the first fight of his professional career.
