  • Description

POLICE SET UP BARRIERS ON ROADS LEADING TO THE SCIENCE FACULTY IN PARIS TODAY (WEDNESDAY) AND CHECKED STUDENTS' CARDS AS THEY ARRIVED FOR THE THIRD DAY OF EXAMINATIONS.

FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE RIOTS IN MAY AND JUNE, BIG POLICE REINFORCEMENTS WERE DRAFTED INTO THE AREA BUT THEY STAYED IN THEIR VANS. MOST OF THE STUDENTS AGAIN TURNED UP TO SIT FOR THE EXAMINATIONS TODAY AND ALTHOUGH SOME CHANTED 'DOWN WITH POLICE EXAMINATIONS' THERE WERE NO CLASHES.

THE FRENCH CABINET HELD TALKS ON UNIVERSITY REFORM TODAY AND THERE WERE UNCONFIRMED REPORTS THAT THE TALKS WERE INCONCLUSIVE. THE DISCUSSION CAME AGAINST A BACKGROUND OF THE CONTINUING TROUBLE. BECAUSE OF THE POLICE PRESENCE NEAR THE SCIENCE FACULTY MANY OF THE 1,500 STUDENTS DUE TO TAKE PRELIMINARY MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS REFUSED TO TAKE THE TESTS.

REPORTS ALSO SAID THAT STUDENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NANTERRE, TO THE NORTH OF PARIS, HAD OCCUPIED ONE OF THE UNIVERSITY'S FOUR PRESIDENTIAL HALLS, A BUILDING CLOSED BY THE UNIVERSITY AUTHORITIES IN JULY. ABOUT 150 STUDENTS FORCED THEIR WAY THROUGH THE UNIVERSITY'S MAIN DOOR AND HELD A MEETING.
