  • Description

TEN THOUSANDS INDONESIANS AT A PRE-MAY DAY RALLY IN DJAKARTA YESTERDAY (SATURDAY), DEMANDED INTENSIFICATION OF THE 'CRUSH MALAYSIA' CAMPAIGN AND SEVERANCE OF RELATIONS WITH THE CHINESE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC.

THE RALLY, THE QUIETEST IN MANY YEARS, ALSO CALLED ON LIEUTENANT GENERAL SUHARTO, CHIEF OF THE GENERAL STAFF AND HOLDER OF EXECUTIVE POWER IN THE STATE, TO STAY IN OFFICE UNTIL GENERAL ELECTIONS COULD BE HELD.

INDONESIA'S FIRST AND ONLY ELECTIONS WERE STAGED IN 1955 AND GOVERNMENT IN RECENT YEARS HAS LARGELY BEEN BY PRESIDENTIAL DECREE.

STATEMENTS FROM GENERAL SUHARTO AND PRESIDENT SUKARNO WERE READ OUT BY THE MINISTER FOR LABOUR AND POLICE COMMISSIONER, MR. AMALUDIN AND NATIONALIST FRONT MINISTER, MR. SJAIHU.

GENERAL SUHARTO'S STATEMENT WARNED WORKERS AGAINST TAKING FORCEFUL ACTION AGAINST ANYONE. THEY SHOULD LEAVE LAW ENFORCEMENT TO THE ARMED FORCES.
