  • Description

The new Federal Executive Council of Nigeria was sworn in on Wednesday (13 August) in Lagos. The country's new ruler, Brigadier Murtala Muhammed, took the occasion to declare that his Government was determined to combat inflation which is now estimated at about 30 percent. He said he would set up a special anti-inflation task force to recommend long and short term solutions.

The new Government takes over from General Yakubu Gowon who was overthrown in a coup d'etat at the beginning of August. The man who made the radio announcement of the coup, Colonel Joseph Garba, is Commissioner for External Affairs in the new Council.

There are 25 members of the Council and 14 of them are police and military men. The others are civilians. This is only a slightly larger number of General Gowon.
